Which Basque (Euskara) is this?

Basque is a language isolate — unrelated to Spanish, French, or anything else in Europe. This course is Euskara as used in the Basque Country (eu-ES), with the unified standard (euskara batua) you will see in schools, signs, and media, rather than a single village dialect that nobody else understands.

Who it is for

Learners here are often connecting to family, moving to Bilbao, Donostia, or Vitoria-Gasteiz, or they simply want a language the big apps ignored. You do not need Spanish first, though many people in the street will switch. HyperLingua is for people who want to produce Basque sentences, not only recognise the flag.

Agglutination looks frightening on a whiteboard and natural in a sentence you can say. You listen to native audio, shadow the line, and recall it from your language. Islands cover greetings, food, the street, and who you are — the first conversations in a Basque town. We do not open with a 12-case chart.

Pronunciation

Basque spelling is relatively honest, but the s / z / x distinction, the palatal sounds, and a rhythm that is not Spanish will not appear if you only read. Shadowing native speakers is how the language stops sounding like “Spanish with x’s.” Five to fifteen minutes a day on full sentences is the pronunciation plan.
